The 'completo' has become a symbol of traditional Chilean fast food that consists of a hot dog bun open lengthwise, with a viennese in the middle on which various ingredients are placed. The most common and identity is the "complete Italian" with tomato, avocado and homemade mayonnaise. A delight!
A little history…
This is a variation of the classic American hot dog that dates back to the second half of the 19th century and would have arrived in Chile many years later.
During the 1920s, Eduardo Bahamondes would have been the first to import the idea of bringing hot dogs to Chile. Bahamondes, decided to open a store in Portal Fernández Concha, which was next to the Plaza de Armas in Santiago, and was very successful with ElQuick Lunch Bahamondes. In addition, he introduced new ingredients, since only ketchup and mustard were not the favorite dressings of the national population of that time. Thus, it occurred to him to add mayonnaise, sauerkraut, tomato, avocado, onion and parsley, among other ingredients.
The idea of the completo spread to other places in the area and the Portal Fernández Concha remained until today as a well-known fast food center in Santiago, especially for 'completos'. Subsequently, the Nuria restaurant located on Huérfanos street specialized in giant versions of the completo, while the Dominó restaurant, born in 1952 on Agustinas street, became very popular for its fast service. Currently, the completo is part of the life of all Chileans, it is not only bought in restaurants, but it is also made at home to share with family or friends.
