Gabriela Mistral Center

Meeting of performing arts, culture and people.

Located in a historic building in the heart of Santiago, the Gabriela Mistral Center (GAM) is a contemporary cultural center inaugurated in 2010, which brings together the best of art, design, cinema and gastronomy. It has an incredible billboard where you can find tickets to concerts, plays and much more.

A little history ...

It is located in a historic building in the center of Santiago that was inaugurated in 1972 as the headquarters for the Third United Nations World Conference on Trade and Development, where how to overcome poverty was discussed. It was built under the government of Salvador Allende, in a record time of 275 days. It was a Latin American milestone of architectural modernity and constructivist utopia. After the 1973 coup d'état, the military junta closed the place and transformed it into its operations center under the name Diego Portales Building. With the return to democracy, in 1989, the space became a venue for congresses and meetings; the rear tower housed the Ministry of Defense.

At the beginning of 2006, a fire destroyed part of the construction, prompting Michelle Bachelet's government to rethink its original meaning and return it to the citizens. In September 2010 it was renamed Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center, GAM, to take charge of the history of its headquarters, and project from there its relationship with citizens and its environment

What to see at the GAM?

During your visit to the Gabriela Mistral Center you can enjoy different exhibitions. If you are passionate about theater and literature, you cannot miss the BiblioGAM, free library specializing in performing and visual arts, with open shelving and study or reading rooms.
